An app for tracking and registering ripening actions in a fresh produce warehouse, that is exactly what the brand new GreenCommerce Ripening App does at packer and trading company Euro West. The App is directly connected to GreenCommerce, so everyone within the organization works with the most up-to-date information. At the end of 2023, Euro West started working with the new Ripening App to digitize the registration of the ripening process.

Motivation for digitizing Euro West
Euro West offers various options for packaging, repackaging, sorting and stickering of fruit and vegetables. In addition, Euro West is specialized in ripening. Unripe fruits can be ripened in the ripening cells, such as in the unique specialty cell, where small batches of fruit and vegetables are ripened or dried in a special program.

At Euro West, various items are being riped before they are repackaged or stored for a client. There are several ripening masters active who coordinate the entire ripening process. Here they carry out interim checks that were previously registered outside the system, on paper or Excel sheets. To support such specialist tasks within GreenCommerce, the idea arose to develop a separate App for the ripening process in addition to extensions to the system: the Ripening App. Stefan van Marrewijk, QHSE manager at Euro West: “We encountered a number of challenges when it came to registering the ripening process of mangoes and avocados. For example, we previously tried to register this in GreenCommerce via workarounds. Over time, this created challenges because that method was not designed for the ripening process. We then sat down with jem-id to come up with a constructive solution.”

Always up to date with the most current information
The ripening master can provide pallets with ripening properties on the work floor via the App, after which a new ripening can be created. This can indicate, among other things, how long pallets must ripen and what ripening properties are expected at the end of the period. Stefan: “The new situation creates much more insight. This way we can immediately see which products have ripened and how long products have been in a ripening cell. We can also see how many pallets we ripen per period, which allows us to better anticipate the future.”

Ripening properties are clarified by means of groupings in the stock, after which they can be linked to customer specifications. Stefan: “This way we know exactly the amount of stock that is actively ripening and what the intended ripening properties are. By having more insight into the status of the stock, we can also better adjust the planning accordingly.”

Several validation rounds
The project was divided into different phases, each of which was successfully completed. Stefan: “By updating in phases, the departments involved could gradually get used to the new working method. The mutual involvement of both jem-id and Euro West has resulted in a project that truly represents a partnership and smooth collaboration.”

Euro West employees have been working satisfactorily with the Ripening App for some time now. Stefan concludes: “The biggest benefit is in the management of the ripening process. The information was available, but only accessible to a limited number of people because it was not centrally recorded. With the Ripening App and new developments in GreenCommerce, this information is made more widely available. This way, everyone involved is always aware of the correct information.”
