From strategy to workable releases for GreenCommerce Future Proof

In the previous update about GreenCommerce Future Proof, we discussed the research methodology using value points. In this article, we build on that by taking a closer look at the Future Proof release process. What do we mean by a “horizontal migration strategy,” releases, and domains? We explain it.

As mentioned earlier, the valuation system laid the foundation for our development planning. After that, we started looking at the logical relationships between components. Jeroen Nibbering, Product Owner at GreenCommerce, explains: “We believe it’s important not only to focus on theory, but especially on the practical application of GreenCommerce. That’s why we want to release in a logical way, so that the first customers can start using it as soon as possible. Within each domain, we add various functionalities to a release.”

Domains
GreenCommerce is divided into different domains such as sales, inventory, export, and logistics. Each domain contains multiple functionalities that have been assigned a priority based on value points. We previously wrote about this research methodology in another article. Based on a set of value points, a domain can be structured. In total, we have identified 14 different domains, which we have visualized below.

“To make the process more transparent, we essentially divided GreenCommerce into one large pie. The different slices of the pie represent parts of the application, or ‘domains’. In each development sprint, we now focus on one domain. This helps us maintain focus and add a lot of functionality in a short time. The next release is aimed at enabling the core process of GreenCommerce; this requires functionalities from multiple domains. For each release, we have mapped out which parts of the ‘pie slices’ we want to add to support the different processes within GreenCommerce. This way, we can quickly and efficiently translate features into Future Proof screens,” says Jeroen.

Steady growth towards maturity
For GreenCommerce Future Proof, we follow a ‘horizontal migration strategy’. What do we mean by that? Jeroen explains: “With a horizontal migration strategy, we can make the application more mature with each release. GreenCommerce is divided into different domains. With this strategy, we deliberately choose to touch multiple domains per release, rather than fully completing one domain first. Using GreenCommerce is a process in which users frequently switch between different domains. The focus is therefore not on fully completing a domain, but on gradually increasing the maturity of the application.”

Releases to onboard more users over time
Because we have planned several years for GreenCommerce Future Proof, a total of six releases have been defined. The first release, ‘Inspire’, served as a showcase during the launch at the Padel Event. This release was primarily intended to inspire customers about the possibilities that Future Proof will offer. We are currently working towards the next release, ‘Foundation’, which is scheduled for the end of 2026. With each release, more functional processes will be supported, allowing more customers to get on board. Jeroen concludes: “For some companies, multiple releases will be needed to fully transition, while others may be able to start with just one or two releases. This depends on the size of the company and the different user profiles within a customer organization. The development approach and technical architecture also make it possible to start using Future Proof at an early stage, for example with specific users or for specific processes.”
